The brief
London has roughly eleven usable summer evenings a year and you should not spend any of them indoors. Terraces, ranked by how quickly they fill.
Fills in ten minutes
The Elgin, Notting Hill — the terrace on Ladbroke Grove that appears fully populated the second the sun does. Lock Tavern, Camden — roof, canal, no chance after five.
Fills in an hour
The Eagle, Notting Hill, after Portobello. Prince of Peckham for the yard. Camden Town Brewery Beer Hall for the version where nobody minds standing.
Bermondsey, all afternoon
The Beer Mile arches — Anspach & Hobday, Brew By Numbers, Kernel — are the best outdoor drinking in London on a Saturday, because the seating is a crate and there is always another arch.
Chelsea and the river
The Sporting Page and the Cheyne Walk stretch for the civilised version, followed by the walk along the Thames that makes the whole city look reasonable.
The one rule
Go at four, not seven. Every terrace in London is empty at four and unusable by six-thirty, and the light is better anyway.
